So here's a question if you don't mind answering... when they were searching your laptop for porn, what sort of search terms did the government guy use?

Great story, that's the kind of thing that doesn't happen to a lot of people. Sorry your trip to Canada started like this.

I bet if this had happened in the united states it would have been worse.

Ahahahaha nice man. I was in Ottawa when that happenned, read the article in the paper, loved the story (it's crazy how suspicious customs officials can get of iPods, especially in countries where there aren't many). But DARN to think that this was all because of WoW... that's great.

And them thinking you were the leader of all of WoW? Excellent. Makes us all out to be part of this crazy terrorist cult.

He didn't allow me to see most of them. The only time I saw was when he turned the laptop back to me to ask me about suspicious files. I remember one such search term was "cache", which any computer programmer can tell you is a perfectly benign thing.

You win the net man.

Seriously, that made my day, and the responses and the wit have made my week.

Stupid, you are pretty damn cool for standing up to the authorities for what is right, and I agree with many of your thoughts about government and such.

The only fault I find with this story is that you never lost your temper. If that is accurate, I understand the bomb squad's hesitation to approach the plane to determine if your story was true.

I am also disappointed with the speed at which the plane was evacuated. You would think to balance the amount of post evacuation processing the emergency exits would have thrown open and the stupid inflatable slides would have popped out letting people flee the plane. Perhaps they were afraid the bomber would blow the plane as soon as he was off and wanted to get everyone else off first, but that seems pretty stupid.

I also thought it was amusing they were searching for child porn or porn in general. Is porn illegal in Canada or something? Or do only terrorists look at porn?

Apparently dropping an Ipod in the toilet waves any and all rights you might have? Lol was your house a shambled when you got home and there was a note" Love, the Government".

Look out for the guys with the black bags that arrive in the middle of the night.

"Sir, were you aware your Ipod contained songs "Anarchy in the UK" by the Sex Pistols, "Let the Bodies Hit the Floor" by Drowning Pool, "Boom" by POD, "Xplosive" by Dr. Dre, and "Bullet in the Blue Sky" by U2? I'm afraid you are under arrest, charged with high treason and intentions to commit international terrorism".

You know, Stupid, the more I think about that laptop search, the more livid I become.

Don't get me wrong, I would have done the same thing you did in that situation, but I wonder what would have happend if you refused and demanded a lawer - in either Canada or the US.

It is just absolutly wrong that they looked at you computer.

Well if you refused chances are youd be refused entry into the country and returned to the US at least. Refusing makes you look guilty, truth or not... mindset is.. if your innocent, you have nothing to hide

Q u o t e:
You're kidding, right? Have you seen the natural damage a plane can land with? It takes alot to down a plane.

No, I'm NOT kidding. How naive can you possibly be? Sure, planes can take more damage than some think, but if there's a large enough hole in the right spot - no more plane. I happen to have aerophysicists' backing up this one. You? iPods are small, sure, but it IS possible to make a powerful bomb of that size -- plus, the authorities DON'T just believe the object is the size of an iPod just like they don't just take the word of the possible suspect that it's an iPod! It would be stupid of them to do so.

Q u o t e:
When you get pulled over in a car in the States, the darned cops pull a friggin gun on you

And which state was this exactly? Maybe the slums of Miami, but not where I live. (In truth, I haven't been pulled over, but I've seen others get pulled over and personally know some policemen.)

Q u o t e:
It seems that suspects are guilty until proven innocent nowadays.

Yeah, because questioning someone after an incident that is quite suspicious is just wrong (whether it's suspicious to YOU, the reader who ALREADY KNOWS that it's just an iPod or not). :P

Q u o t e:

If there's nothing illegal on there, he'd has nothing to worry about. And if there was something illegal on there, I'd say "GOOD, another criminal apprehended." Now, random searches of everyone's laptops is one thing, but searching the laptop of someone who IS suspicious is the right thing to do (again, whether YOU think it is or not, the police wouldn't be doing their job otherwise).

Q u o t e:
Not to mention the massive curtailing of civil rights

Uh huh. Massive curtailing, all right. Boo hoo, I can't bring liquids on this flight for a while! They check my luggage for bombs! My civil rights!!

The vast majority of you are so uninformed - THAT is what's really scary, not some personal questions, a five hour wait, and an innocent man properly labeled as innocent at the end of the day!

(And yes, I'm taking a caustic tone with you now, Stupid, after seeing your response to my first quite-friendly-unjudging-to-you post in this thread. Edit: And yes, I know you personally didn't post all the things I quoted above.)

"For a while?" The USA PATRIOT act had a "sunset clause" that was intended to make the laws only last "for a while." You see how well that went.

The problem is every time the government takes a little of our freedom, they virtually never give it back, but only use it as a justification to take a little more.

EDIT: And I'm sorry if you think the inability to bring liquids on a plane is the only civil rights we've been forced to relinquish since 9/11.

EDIT2: Tuhljin, I never personally insulted you as far as I remember. Maybe you're misinterpreting? I'm defending my views on liberty vs. security.

I understand, that's why I would have done the same thing Stupid did. But the whole reasoning that refusing makes you look guilty makes me so angry I could throw up. I mean, by that reasoning people should have no problem letting several customs agents reading through their dairy. Personal things are personal, and just because it is someone in an official capsitiy that is reading it does not make it any better - it is still another human being going through your personal stuff without your concent and without justification.
