For the past few days when I log into WoW and play for maybe 5 to 10 minutes my screen will go black. I will then only hear a small bit of sound from what I was last doing. I have tried nearly everything, from adding -opengl to the end of my launcher to even reformatting my hard drive. I was very excited when I saw the patch because I thought it might fix this problem. I tried again today...no luck :(

I've been having a very similar problem.

My screens go black, and then say "No signal," like what would happen if you unplugged them from the computer. They then go into their normal standby mode. Then I hear my graphics card fans spin to their highest speed.

And no, it isn't heat....because I just booted up after all day of being off, I monitor my temps (and they don't get high @all), and I've even distrusted the temp monitors, and put a fan blowing on them (like a room fan).

The only choice is press reset on my case and try again.

It happens after I hit logon, or on the character screen, or after a few minutes of play.
But this is @total random. After maybe 1 or 2 times (8 yesterday), it plays fine!!!

I don't recall having this problem before the patch.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the GeForce 6 series graphics cards. I personally use a 6600GT.

I have the same issue. Running a brand new computer with Windows Vista and a brand new Nvidia GeForce 7600GS 512 MB PCI-e card with a 19" wide screen monitor. Graphics will corrupt, then screen goes black, then begins to alternate between 'Analog' and 'Digital', almost as if you had turned it off.....fans in comp spin up to super high speed...can still hear game sounds in background...keyboard locks up - only solution is to press 'reset' button. Will happen every 10 min, or may run for 3 hours and never happen, then crash repeatedly. We took computer back thinking that was it...same issue. Next thing to try is swapping the Nvidia for the Radeon x1300 running in other comp (Windows XP) which never crashes while running WoW. I've upgraded all the drivers, currently running Forceware 158.18 beta drivers - still same issue. Turning off the antialiasing on the video card helped a bit, sometimes screen is not entirely black - can still see bits of the game. Is it Nvidia, Vista or WoW? Right now game is not very playable on new the new computer. Anyone else having same issue? Any fixes?

SAME THING FOR ME.....i log in and get to play maybe 10 or 15 seonds and then it freezes and then my screen turns black and i have to reboot my computer....keep in mind im running a brand new laptop with 2 gigs of ram and windows vista with all updated drivers and all that crap....really starting to make me angry

I have been having the same problem after the new patch, but I am running Windows XP on a computer that is about 3 years old. I play for 5 to 10 min and the screen goes black. All the in-game sounds are still working, and a friend has told me that I can occasionally still control my character. I just can't see anything. Same as everyone else, the only thing I can do is press the reset button on the case. I don't think it is the graphics card you guys were talking about because that isn't the card I have, and i have the same problem.

I'm using XP so i would doubt that it is a vista thing.

Same problem here black screen at certain points in game, sometimes it will not kick back over and sometimes it will kick back in game and i can continue to play. But i also get this window and i can send an error report in for it. It pops up when the game does come back on its an ATI VPU Recover window says VPU Recover has reset your graphics accelerator as it was no longer responding to graphics driver commands Please tell ATI technologies about this problem. And to whoever had the brand new comp who returned it and said only thing left to try is switch to ATI X1300 card thats what i am running on and obviously its doing it to me now. This problem only started like 3 days ago. Never happened to me once in the 3 months i have had the game until like 3 days ago.

I am sooo happy I found this place..Unfortunately it took getting killed and hearing my character die behind a black screen before I decided I really needed to find a solution to this problem. (Playing a different character at the time)I downloaded the game Tuesday, May 29th and the Black Screen appeared from day...minute...1. I have Windows Vista as well as many people here..I have posted to the Windows Vista forum to see if they can help.
Does anyone know how to fix this? I would really like to keep playing, but I don't want to spend money if the game does not work..

The game is well worth the money and I love all of the Blizzard products so I do not suggest quitting after a troublesome first few days, but I do really wish a Blizzard tech support moderator could throw in his two cents about this issue.

This may help also if an administrator gets around to checking out the problem. In addition to the stuff I mentioned in an earlier post, I have to accept the "terms of use" for the new patch every time I log on after this happens.

It's either vista or compaq presario.

Although my hatred for vista leads me to believe it's vista....so far noone has a suggestion on fixing it ?

I installed the latest drivers for my video card and it seems to be working better..at least so far. Not sure if that helps any of you.

I am still having the same problems even w hen they dd another patch. I have no clue how to fix this. I downloaded the new graphics drivers and all.. and I still get a black screen. Has blizzard said anything about this at all?!

I played original WoW from release date up to about November last year and everything worked great. Now, i just installed BC about 4 days ago and am getting this problem. I have tried -opengl, -nosound, running windowed, and combinations of each other and it doesn't work. I have updated all graphics drivers, sound driver, motherboard and BIOS and nothing works. I have run repair utility, defragged, fresh installations and those don't work either. I have yet to still try to reinstall just WoW and play without BC installed, since that would be identical settings as the last time i played and it worked perfectly. I also recently added more RAM from 512 to 1024, so i also tried pulling out the newly added ram, did not resolve any issues. What i reccommend is that some of us try to install original WoW and see if this problem persists.

If that doesn't work, i am pretty sure it is a problem with the recent patches.

Usually before i get the black screen, i get blotches of color on my screen. Most of the time it results in a hard lock that requires a manual restart, sometimes a soft lock that can just be alt+f4 or closing via task manager, but then my computer runs sluggish afterwards. Once i also got a blue screen that suggested a corrupt ati2dvag.dll. I am running a dual core XP MCE with an ATI X550.

It would be really nice if a blue could just respond to this thread so that we know blizzard is aware of this.
