Spell Impact + PWF + Firepower
Patch: Beta 3.0.2 Build 9014
Target: Target Dummies in Theramore

Spec: Arcane to Spell Impact, Fire to PWF / Firepower
Level: 80

Fire +damage: 1508
Method: Cast Fireball until a good range has been observed, backsolve for the gain.

Combatlog: http://zaldinar.bounceme.net/research/wotlk_beta/sipwffp_9014/WoWCombatLog.txt
Parse Script: http://zaldinar.bounceme.net/research/wotlk_beta/sipwffp_9014/parse.pl

Q u o t e:
Gain for Fireball from Spell Impact + Playing with Fire + Firepower

Tooltip Min: 898
Tooltip Max: 1143
Plus Damage: 1508

Datapoints: 1526
Min Observed: 2875
Max Observed: 3166
Expected Spread 1: (1143 - 898) * (1.06 * 1.1 * 1.03) = 294.2401
Expected Spread 2: (1143 - 898) * (0.06 + 1.1 * 1.03) = 292.285
Expected Spread 3: (1143 - 898) * ((0.06 + 1.1) * 1.03) = 292.726
Expected Spread 4: (1143 - 898) * ((0.06 + 1.03) * 1.1) = 293.755
Observed Spread: 3166 - 2875 = 291

Gain Formula: Observed Value / Expected Value without Spell Impact
Expected Min: (898 + (3.5 / 3.5) * 1508) = 2406
Expected Max: (1143 + (3.5 / 3.5) * 1508) = 2651
Gain by Min: 2875 / 2406 = 1.1949293433084
Gain by Max: 3166 / 2651 = 1.19426631459826

Proposed Gain Formula 1: (1.06 * 1.03 * 1.1) = 1.20098
Delta by Min: abs(1.20098 - 1.1949293433084) = (0.00605065669160454)
Delta by Max: abs(1.20098 - 1.19426631459826) = (0.00671368540173534)

Proposed Gain Formula 2: (0.06 + 1.03 * 1.1) = 1.193
Delta by Min: abs(1.193 - 1.1949293433084) = (0.00192934330839534)
Delta by Max: abs(1.193 - 1.19426631459826) = (0.00126631459826454)

Proposed Gain Formula 3: ((0.06 + 1.1) * 1.03) = 1.1948
Delta by Min: abs(1.1948 - 1.1949293433084) = (0.000129343308395535)
Delta by Max: abs(1.1948 - 1.19426631459826) = (0.000533685401735262)

Proposed Gain Formula 4: ((0.06 + 1.03) * 1.1) = 1.199
Delta by Min: abs(1.199 - 1.1949293433084) = (0.00407065669160467)
Delta by Max: abs(1.199 - 1.19426631459826) = (0.00473368540173547)

Conclusion: Formula 3 seems the most likely. So atleast for modeling effects with Firepower, PWF, and Spell Impact, Spell Impact should be added to Firepower, and then PWF multiplied in.

Spell Impact + PWF + Firepower + Arcane Instability

Delta by Max: abs(1.230644 - 1.23010184835911) = (0.000542151640890332)

Conclusion: Arcane Instability can be applied after the summing of Firepower and Spell Impact.

Srry to invade your research.. =) but im beguining to look into these thing of theorycraft and have a question that I think you will know the answer.. =).

Whats the crit coefficient for the mage's spells? are they fixed? all have the same coefficient? or do they change like the spell power coefficient?

Thank You!

No interruption at all. Crit has no 'coefficient', it has a rating to percent conversion though which is constant across all spells and classes. Info on that can be found at http://www.wowwiki.com/Combat_rating_system

I personally have not tested it, but I know it was tested repeatedly. I can say anecdotally that I've only seen one resist since I've been in Northrend, and it was a target three levels higher than me. I'm walking around with ~7% +hit from gear on me, so I'd expect no resists until three levels up.

Documented test to follow when I get 80 and hit capped gear against a 83 raid boss. That dummy is going to take a very long term beating.

Hello again,

Another question, I have recently passed by some dps calculating sites for mages. That take in consideration the new specs and all. And when comparing spell dmg vs hit rating I noticed that puting 386 hit rating or putting 386 spell dmg. The spell dmg one comes out winning, are these forums correct? 1 spell power point is worth more than 1 point of hit rating?

Thx again!

It all depends on your relative levels of other stats and what talents you have. If you give yourself 17% hit from gear and have 3% hit from EP, you're wasting 3% hits worth of itemization that could be spent elsewhere.

Yes, I understand.. but thinking on the following situation (I used the website you pointed out):

- I have elemental precision
- I have 1200 spell power
- I have 12% hit

If I increase 1 spell power point, it generates more dps than 1 hit point. And I always learned from all mages that hit rating is always more important than spell dmg.

Is this correct? Has blizz really changed the priority of hit rating?

In LK the values have shifted, the 'value' of hit is not only in its average DPS contribution, but its removal of the opportunity to underperform. The higher your spell power the more the hit will be worth, the lower your hit the more it will be worth. I'm designing a grid plot graph util for the TCoM to show this, but it isn't ready for use yet.

Crit Gain by Observed Min: (2692 / 1537) = 1.75146389069616
Crit Gain by Observed Max: (2786 / 1600) = 1.74125
Proposed Formula: 1.0 + ( 0.5 * ( 1 + ( 0.1 * Points in Burnout) ) )
With 5/5 Burnout: 1.0 + ( 0.5 * ( 1 + ( 0.5) ) ) = 1.75
Delta from Observed Min Gain: abs(1.75146389069616 - 1.75) = 0.00146389069616126
Delta from Observed Max Gain: abs(1.74125 - 1.75) = 0.00875000000000004

Crit Gain by Observed Max: (3497 / 2021) = 1.73033151904998
Proposed Formula: 1.0 + ( 0.5 * ( 1 + ( 0.1 * Points in Burnout) ) )
With 5/5 Burnout: 1.0 + ( 0.5 * ( 1 + ( 0.5) ) ) = 1.75
Delta from Observed Min Gain: abs(1.8042646254784 - 1.75) = 0.0542646254784036
Delta from Observed Max Gain: abs(1.73033151904998 - 1.75) = 0.0196684809500247

Conclusion: Burnout is providing gain to *all* spells except blizzard, as opposed to fire spells only.

Level: 80

Method: Cast Abarr, solve for coefficient

Q u o t e:
Coefficient calculation for Arcane Barrage

Tooltip Min: 936
Tooltip Max: 1144
Plus Damage: 1236

Datapoints: 220
Min Observed: 1819
Max Observed: 2027
Expected Spread: 1144 - 936 = 208
Observed Spread: 2027 - 1819 = 208

Coefficient Formula: (Observed Value - Base Value) / Plus Damage
Coefficient by Min: (1819 - 936) / 1236 = 0.714401294498382
Coefficient by Max: (2027 - 1144) / 1236 = 0.714401294498382

Proposed Formula: (3 / 3.5) = 0.857142857142857
Delta from Min Coefficient: abs(0.714401294498382 - 0.857142857142857) = 0.142741562644475
Delta from Max Coefficient: abs(0.714401294498382 - 0.857142857142857) = 0.142741562644475

Proposed Formula: (2.5 / 3.5) = 0.714285714285714
Delta from Min Coefficient: abs(0.714401294498382 - 0.714285714285714) = 0.000115580212667554
Delta from Max Coefficient: abs(0.714401294498382 - 0.714285714285714) = 0.000115580212667554

Living Bomb Glyph
Patch: 3.1 PTR build 9684
Target: Target Dummies in Theramore

Level: 80

Method: Living Bomb with assorted talent / CSD configurations, isolate crit and noncrit values using the glyph.

Effects Non-Crit Crit Gain

None 607 910 1.4992
CSD 627 969 1.5454
CSD + 5 Burnout 627 969 1.5454
5 Burnout 607 910 1.4992

Casting Combustion and then Living Bomb did not use any charges. Charging combustion to 7 stacks with a base 27% crit rate resulted in 7 / 20 ticks critting. No Living Bomb ticks generated ignite debuffs. The glyph does not appear to interact with any crit gain effects other than CSD.

EDIT: Later builds of the 3.1 PTR have changed this behavior. This test will be repeated following the conclusion of the PTR.

Ice Lance Glyph
Patch: 3.1 PTR build 9684
Target: Target Dummies in Darnassus

Level: 80

Method: Ice lance the target, then frost nova and ice lance them again, record on different target levels to see approximate gain.

Target Level Pre Nova Post Nova Gain

60 252 763 3.0277
80 236 712 3.0169
83 (boss) 226 927 4.1017

Conclusion: Ice Lance on targets of greater level than you does indeed provide quad damage when glyphed.

Have you done any testing to see if talented less chance to hit spells (Heightened Senses and the like) can be mitigated by +hit? Pookz was talking about it on WoM and I wasn't sure, so I'd figure this would be one of the better places to ask :)

Dutton: Think bop might immune deathgrip?
Brontes: I doubt it. Cant be dodged blocked or parried and goes through cloak
Brontes : Pretty sure its like the hand of jesus coming down and moving you
