Sorting | Editing

Most forum features can only be accessed when you are logged in. After logging in, special icons will appear on your posts, allowing additional options.

Sorting
There are many different sorting options. These options will determine which posts you see, making this a very important selection. There are strengths and weaknesses of each sorting option. Your sorting selection will be saved in a cookie each time you change your selection.

  • Sort by Author - This option might be useful if you're trying to find posts by a specific author. Select this option, then page through post pages until you get to the name you're looking for. This option is rarely used.
  • Sort by Subject - This option might be useful if you're trying to find posts on a specific subject. This option is rarely used.
  • Sort by Creation Date - Select this option if you want to see the newest topics. This option ignores the number of replies or number of views. You'll always see the latest posts with this option selected.
  • Sort by Latest Reply - This option is useful if you want to gauge which threads are popular threads. This option will bring up any thread that has a new response/post. This allows you to keep up with popular topics. This is the default sorting method.
  • Sort by # of Replies - This will show you the posts that have received the most responses.
  • Sort by # of Views - This can show you which posts have received the most readers, BUT the view count isn't always reliable. It will not always show a true count of how many times a post has been read, and may be inflated higher than it actually is. Keep this in mind.

You can also change your sorting option by clicking on the forum headers: Subject, Author, Replies, Views, and Last Post. You can reverse the order of those sorts by clicking on those headers again. Example: clicking on Author will list posts from A-Z, and clicking on it again will list them by Z-A. A little grey arrow shows you the direction of the sort (up or down).

Editing
Select this icon to edit a post after it has been posted. This icon only shows up if you are logged into the forums. Post editing allows you to go back and correct any mistakes you have made in your post. Sometimes posters that respond to your post may not understand what you were trying to say. You can use the edit ability to reword your post so that it is easier to understand and to clear up any confusion. After a post has been edited, a special red warning message will be added to the post. This informs readers that the original post has been modified and that posted responses may not make sense because the original post has been changed. Note: each time you edit a post you must change something in the post, or the forum system will warn you that the message has been already posted and will deny the post.

Post Preview
Post Preview allows you to test your post before posting. You can see how your post will be formatted and make any changes to it before it becomes "live."

Post Preview does not show up for the editing of posts. This is not a bug.

Deleting Posts
Sometimes you change your mind about making a post after it's posted. Maybe you have a question that has been answered and you no longer need your post cluttering the forums. Maybe you have made a post, but due to the responses, you have changed your mind about posting it. Delete Post allows you to change your mind and remove any post or response you have made.

Signatures
Posters can use signatures to leave a sign-off at the end of their posts. A signature is not necessary, but many posters enjoy creating unique signatures at the end of their posts. It's common to list your name, a saying, or contact information such as an email address or website. Select the "options" button in the top right of the forum, or click on the signature link on the posting page to create a signature. After you have entered your signature, it will appear on any new posts you create.

  • Signatures must not contain offensive text or link to any questionable material.
  • Please do not include offensive pictures in your signature.
  • Signatures are a fixed length. If you try to create a signature that is too big, it will not work. You must shorten your Signature to make it work.
  • You can also use BML in your signatures.
  • You cannot remove the line (HR bar) separating your signature from your post. We added this because signatures were blending into the posts and it was confusing to readers.
